With his arms outstretched in a final embrace, civil rights legend and Chicago activist Bishop Arthur M. Brazier delivered his last sermon Sunday morning, telling his congregation to avoid prayers for prosperity and instead focus on serving the poor and loving God.
Thousands gathered at Apostolic Church of God, many heartbroken and in tears, to hear the longtime pastor speak his final message.
Brazier, 86, who marched alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to protest segregation, led the Pentecostal congregation for 48 years, building up the South Side church, driving out gang violence, fighting for affordable housing and revitalizing the surrounding community.
Though he would not speak about politics from the pulpit, Brazier’s influence and clout are well-known, and his church became an obligatory campaign stop for public officials and politicians.
